The South African National Parks (SANParks) supported by Total SA and First National Bank (FNB) recognised deserving conservationists at their 12th annual SANParks Kudu Awards ceremony held at Gallagher Estates in Midrand last night (18 November 2016).

Ms Gladys Mathebula from Bushbuckridge Radio 88.4FM won the Environmental Media Award for Best Community Electronic Media/ Radio Journalist of the Year. Ms Mathebula consistently provided in-depth reporting on rhino poaching issues and created awareness in the local communities about the impact of rhino poaching on conservation and tourism.

Mr Fundisile Mketeni SANParks CEO, said that the Kudu Awards recognises journalists such as Ms Mathebula for their vital contribution to the protection of the environment through the spoken word which reflects the media industries role to inform, educate and make aware. “SANParks plays a significant role in the conservation of biodiversity and cultural heritage, and together with stakeholders such as the media we can continue to protect South Africa”s most valuable national assets.”

The other categories in the 2015 Kudu Awards are Associated Partners, Business Partner of the Year, Corporate Contribution (Non-Profit Making Organisation), Environmental Media: Best Print Journalist; Best Community Electronic Media/ Radio Journalist; Best Community Print Media Journalist; Best National Electronic Media/ Television Journalist, Individual Contribution, Honorary Ranger Best Region of the Year, Honorary Ranger Best Project of the Year and the Environmental Education/ Capacity Building.

The Awards evening also saw SANParks staff members being rewarded through the Chief Executive Awards. A total of 36 Chief Executive Awards were given out this year ranging from the Shield Award, Best Customer Service, Best Constituency Builder, Best Ranger Post, Best Performing Camp, Best Performing Park of the Year, Best Performing Entrance Gate/ Reception, Excellent Performance in the workplace, Overall Best Performer, Best Performing Division, Best Leadership Award, CEO Special Award to the Website Community Choice Award.
