Media Release: Accessibility to Southern Kruger National Park

Depending on the condition of roads outside the KNP, access to the southern part of the Park is available only through the Malelane and Numbi Gates. Day visitors are welcome to enter the Park through these gates but are requested to remain on the tarred roads until further notice. Nkhuhlu and Afsaal picnic spots are available and open to day visitors.

Potential overnight visitors are requested not to visit the camps mentioned above as there are no services such as power, water or sewerage. Damage repair, re-commissioning of services and mopping up operations now receive priority and visitors could be in the way of officials responsible for getting services up and running.

Access to the northern section of the KNP across the Sabie River is not possible. The low level bridges at Skukuza across the Sabie and Sand Rivers are still under water and could be structurally unsafe once the water level drops sufficiently. The high level bridge downstream from Skukuza is severally damaged, as is the bridge below Lower Sabie. These bridges will not be able to carry traffic for some considerable time.

The Northern part of the Park is open and accommodation is available as usual. Services are intact and visitors are advised to acquire accommodation in rest camps from Satara northwards.

The interest shown in the welfare of staff and communities is highly appreciated. The co-operation of visitors is requested for the time it will take to restore services in order to accommodate visitors again as soon as is possible.
