In his welcoming speech, Dr Mabunda made a special mention of the type of individuals and organisations who are recipients of the award. “What is also of great importance is to notice that a number of the winners are not only from affluent projects with lots of cash injection but are grassroots interventions with very little or no resources. “These are the projects that I am personally most proud of and hope that the exposure and recognition they get in this prestigious platform will assist them in attracting sponsors who may help to grow the interventions and the impact in our communities.” He said
He also made mention of the fact that through these awards people are being honoured for their meaningful contribution to the protection of the environment through various means which reflects societies admirable social responsibility.
The Kudu Awards is an initiative that aims to recognize external stakeholders for their contribution and efforts in making South African National Parks the custodian of choice for the national parks system of South Africa, and also plays a significant role in the conservation of biodiversity and cultural heritage, thus protecting South Africa”s most valuable national assets
The Awards also reward SANParks staff members for their exceptional work performance and efforts on customer service with various categories under the Chief Executive Awards
Corporate Contribution to Conservation Award(Individual):
Dr Brian van Wilgen was awarded for his significant contributions to conservation, whether through the awarding of either land, funds, and human resources or has entered into business relationship with SANParks and for their group contribution towards this initiative, Jock Safari Lodge In Kruger National Park(Non-Profit)were given the award
Environmental Media Contribution to Conservation (Best Journalist)
This award was presented to conservation/environmental journalists that have been considered to have conducted their reporting in a socially responsible manner and have also given extensive and balanced reporting on conservation related matters. The winners of this award were;

The recipients of this award have contributed in the advancement of sustainable conservation of our biodiversity and cultural heritage. This award was presented Eco Childrens Training, Zani Kunz (Group) who have contributed to educational programmes that further the conservation of our biodiversity and cultural heritage, and for their individual contribution towards conservation Bongani Mbatha and Dr Madelein J. Grundlingh were also given recognition.
