Firefighting teams from SANParks – Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) working collaboratively with the City of Cape Town’s Fire & Rescue Services and partners have made good overnight progress on the Jonkersdam wildfire. Wind conditions have eased, but the fire remains active in places.
Today’s focus will be to extinguish remaining hotspots near Welcome Glen and De Gama Park. Deploy fresh ground crews (±85 firefighters) and aerial support. Maintained firebreaks played a huge role to protect residential areas and aided access for firefighters to protect property.
A spotter plane and helicopter are being deployed to assist with flare-ups. Drone surveillance continues to guide firefighting efforts.
For public safety, The Jonkersdam, horseriding, Louis Gay Dam and Kleinplaas Dam trails are closed until further notice. Stay clear of all fire-affected areas to allow emergency access.
Residents are reminded to stay alert and follow all instructions from emergency services.
SANParks thanks McDonald’s and community members for their support.
Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
