Garden Route National Park Celebrates Remarkable Turnout During SA National Parks Week

South African National Parks (SANParks) held the 18th SA National Parks Week from 16 – 24 September 2023. The week saw 8, 119 free day visitors participate in the campaign compared to last year’s 5,068 in the Garden Route National Park, a 60% increase higher than 2022’s numbers. SA National Parks Week campaign under the established theme ‘Know Your National Parks’ allowed South Africans an opportunity to spend a day at a national park of their choice free of charge.

Tsitsikamma Section saw a total of 3 502 day visitors, Knysna Lakes Section saw 2 292 and Wilderness Section received a total of 2 325 people visiting the parks during SA National Parks Week.

According to Garden Route National Park General Manager, Ms Vuyiswa Radebe “this annual event is a celebration of our rich natural heritage and an opportunity for all South Africans to discover and enjoy the beauty of our national parks at no cost. The Garden Route National Park would like to thank everyone who took the time to learn more about the parks in their neighbourhood and ensure that the week becomes a success.”

“Despite the challenges posed by nature, including the storm surge during the opening weekend and severe rainfalls toward the end of the week, Garden Route National Park remains committed to ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all visitors. In the interest of safety, some hiking trails had to be closed temporarily during the severe weather conditions,” said Radebe.

Garden Route National Park thanks all South Africans who visited the parks this week including local communities, school groups, youth groups and pensioners. “While we faced some obstacles, we see them as opportunities for growth and improvement. We will continue working tirelessly to make Garden Route National Park an even more accessible and enjoyable destination for all,” concludes Radebe.

Garden Route National Park extends an open invitation to everyone to continue exploring and supporting the unique natural wonders within our care, not just during SA National Parks Week but throughout the year.
