Connecting young people to conservation
Jill Bunding-Venter, General Manager of the Garden Route National Park, says National Parks are a haven for the conservation of biodiversity, are rich in plant and animal species and marine life. Parks epitomise conservation in action. This SA National Parks Week campaign, sponsored by First National Bank (FNB) permits all South Africans to explore, the Garden Route National Park. 100 young people mostly from underprivileged communities are invited to a special day”s picnic on Wednesday, the 11th September. So says Bunding-Venter, “we take inviting underprivileged communities to Parks quiet seriously.”
Through a day of edutainment, exhibitors will display work on research undertaken to protect the Park, recreational products, present the dynamic animal and plant life. Fun games and activities are also part of the day.
Sizeka Mpondombini from Sedgefield is one of the invited youngsters visiting the Wilderness section for the first time and cannot wait to see the exhibition stall on careers. SANParks concessionaire, Eden Adventures will treat Mpondombini and her peers to canoeing starting at the Ebb & Flow Rest Camp. They will also explore the Park though a treasure hunt.
In other sections of the Park, the public will be treated to a guided hike to the suspension bridge in Tsitsikamma on the 12th -13th, a night walk in Knysna on the 13th and daily trips to attractions in Wilderness. For more information, call 044 302 5600
Boilerplate: SANParks People and Conservation (P&C) division has a month-to-month programme to engage young people. Educational campaigns managed by P&C include the Kids and Parks programme which target Primary and High Schools. Post tertiary level, SANParks internship programmes as well as the National Groen Sebenza Programme tries to bridge the skills gap.
