“The system can only be breached when the water in Swartvlei system reaches 2 meters and Touw River about 2.1m”, according to Nellie Grootendorst, Senior Section Ranger of the Wilderness Section of the Garden Route National Park (GRNP).
Water levels are currently at 1.34m and 2.1m respectively.
Although this weekend”s weather forecast indicates a drop in the temperature and winds should the rain continue and water levels rise to 1,8m the team will be on standby.
Artificial breaching of the sandbars at the Touw River and Swartriver estuary mouths is done primarily to prevent flooding of neighbouring properties along the River. The open/ closed conditions of the estuary are often cited as one of several environmental factors to influence the abundance of marine fish in estuaries.
The Wilderness system is fed by 3 rivers, the Touw River, the Duiwe River and Langvlei Spruit.
