Mokala Interpretation Centre
The Mokala Interpretation Centre, which was opened in 2013, serves as the cultural and educational heart of the park, acting as a gateway into the long, layered human history of the region. The exhibitions inside the centre highlight the cultural landscape of Mokala, with the narratives presenting the ‘voices’ and experiences of the region’s early inhabitants, helping to contextualise their traditions and migratory patterns within the landscape, among others. The centre also presents the intangible heritage stories told about the area and ecological knowledge of the communities who have shaped and been shaped by the land. One of the heritage resources found within the landscape where the centre is situated is rock art, which tells a story about the spiritual beliefs held by the artists. This information about the cultural heritage of the area is presented alongside information on contemporary conservation efforts and biodiversity, thus highlighting the interconnectedness of culture, environment, and stewardship.
The centre is located within a landscape known for its rolling plains and rich biodiversity. Set amid open savanna and patches of mixed woodland, it sits in an environment shaped by the transitional ecotone between arid and semi-arid biomes. This locality provides visitors with sweeping views of the park’s characteristic camelthorn trees, seasonal grasses, and the diverse wildlife for which the area is renowned. The gentle topography and accessible setting make the centre a natural gathering point for education, orientation, and exploration. The centre is more than an exhibition space, it serves as a place of learning, reflection, and connection helping visitors understand the deep historical tapestry of Mokala and its significance as a living cultural and ecological landscape.
