Doornlaagte Graves
This burial place has eleven graves, ten of which are not enclosed, with only one that is fenced. Only three graves have headstones, with the remainder being unmarked. Two of the unfenced graves have headstones, giving the year of death as 1866. The fenced grave, of Jan Abraham Van Niekerk, has an elaborate headstone that was erected by the University of Stellenbosch in 1926. Following the death of Jan Abraham Van Niekerk, who had been born in 1847 as the youngest of eight children, the ownership of the farm was inherited by the University of Stellenbosch. He was a bachelor who left his farm and estate to the University of Stellenbosch. Van Niekerk had bought the farm in 1881. The university subsequently rented by H. L. du Toit, and it was managed by Klaas Esau, who was a farmworker for Van Niekerk.
