Whiteriver East Caves
The Whiteriver East Caves are located within the lush and ecologically rich Harkerville area of the Knysna Section. These caves hold significant archaeological value due to the discovery of numerous artifacts and evidence of early human activity. Excavations have revealed stone tools and other cultural remnants, shedding light on the daily lives and survival strategies of hunter-gathering communities that once inhabited this area. These findings are crucial in piecing together the broader history of human occupation along the Knysna area, within the broader Garden Route National Park.
The caves, surrounded by indigenous forests and diverse natural habitats, offer important insights into the technological development, resource use, and social organisation of early societies. It provides a tangible connection to South Africa’s distant past, illustrating how ancient peoples interacted with their environment and adapted to changing conditions over millennia. The relatively undisturbed landscape around the caves supports a variety of plant and animal species, making the site important both for natural heritage and conservation efforts.
