Voortrekker Monument
The Voortrekker Monument, found within the Wilderness Section of the Garden Route National Park, overlooks the Touw River and surrounding residential areas. The monument commemorates the Voortrekkers Dutch speakers who migrated inland from the Cape Colony during the Great Trek in the 1830s and 1840s. Monuments of this kind were erected in various parts of South Africa to honour the historical narrative and legacy of the Voortrekker communities. The Voortrekker Monument serves as a reminder of the migration history that shaped many inland settlements and the broader socio-historical development of the country. The monument forms part of the local heritage and contributes to the historical interpretation of the region. Alongside older archaeological and indigenous heritage sites in the Garden Route, it reflects the diverse cultural histories that have shaped the area over time.
