Tornynbank Caves

The Tornynbank Caves are situated in the scenic Harkerville area. Nestled within a diverse landscape of indigenous forest and coastal vegetation, these caves are renowned for their exceptional archaeological importance, offering a rare window into early human history in the area. Excavations have uncovered a wealth of artifacts, among which are stone tools, pottery fragments, and remains of hearths, which collectively reveal patterns of early human habitation.

Besides archaeological artefacts, the caves contain rock art paintings that provide valuable insights into the cultural and spiritual lives of the hunter-gatherers who lived in the region. Collectively, these archaeological findings contribute to a broader understanding of how these communities lived, adapted to their local surroundings, and expressed themselves. The caves serve as a vital record of human evolution, social organisation, and interaction with the environment over thousands of years.

The Tornynbank Caves form part of a rich natural environment that supports a variety of flora and fauna. The caves’ location within this biologically vibrant corridor adds an ecological layer to their significance, as the surrounding habitat remains relatively undisturbed and protected.
