Vital Information
Day Visits
Day visitors are most welcome to visit the Park throughout the year – with no bookings required.
The Park is popular among day visitors for its Bulkraal and Doornhoek picnic sites. Each has picnic and ablution facilities, while Bulkraal also sports a braai area, sparkling blue pool and lush, green grass all year-round. It can be found just off the Lammertjiesleegte tar road, about 10km from Reception.
Please note that due to its popularity, management may be required to cap the number of guests to Bulkraal over the busy summer periods. Doornhoek is situated at the halfway mark on the circular Potlekkertjie route – about 25km from the rest camp when approaching from the Klipspringer Pass.
Park Regulations
To ensure a safe and joyful trip through our parks, kindly adhere to the Rules & Regulations as stipulated by South African National Parks.
Travel in the Park
- Visitors should remain in their vehicles, unless in a designated area (e.g. picnic spot, lookout point).
- Vehicles must remain on designated tourist roads at all times.
- The speed limit in the Park is 40km/hour.
- Visitors may not drive around the Park before sunrise or after sunset. The Park offers guided night drives for those visitors who would like to explore nocturnal Karoo.
Animals
Karoo National Park is home to wild animals in their natural habitat. When walking on trails, at lookout points and around the rest camp area, guests are reminded to always be aware of their surroundings. All visitors should stay within the demarcated areas at picnic sites and not walk into the surrounding bush.
Please be aware that animals such as snakes, lizards, geckoes, bats, spiders and insects do occur in the Park as it is a natural area and sanctuary to wildlife. Please do not attempt to capture or kill any animal, but rather seek assistance from staff members if any animal is causing a disturbance.
Please do not feed any animals in the Park. Animals such as monkeys that are fed can become reliant on humans, lose their natural instinct to find food and even become aggressive. Ensure that vehicles and accommodation units are kept closed and that food is out of sight and reach.
