Afzaal cottage is an old, stone-built, rustic building that is now being used for overnight accommodation in a highly secluded area (southern section) of the park. Previously, before the farm where this cottage was incorporated into the park, this building was used by shepherds. Its placement reflects practical considerations such as proximity to communal resources, farmland, and transport routes, while also forming part of a broader pattern of rural residential layouts typical of the region. It was built using locally sourced stone and other natural materials, reflecting vernacular building techniques which were adapted to available resources. The durability of these materials contributes to the longevity of structures like Afzaal Cottage, while their thermal properties provide practical advantages in the Karoo’s climate. Its preservation helps understand the adaptation of residential architecture to local environmental and social conditions, offering a tangible link to the cultural and social fabric of Karoo communities.
