Jan Smuts served in military service, was South Africa’s Prime Minister of South Africa for two un-linear terms and played a critical role in drafting the constitution of the League of Nations. His roots in the country can be traced to many locations where he lived. One of these is found within the Addo Elephant National Park. The park has ruins of a house which was apparently owned by Jan Smuts.

It has been argued that these wagon and the old house was used during the Second World War, providing a safe location for those who were stationed at this area – which was most probably chosen as a much safer place. The wagon is no longer in a great state of preservation – even though it could still be restored for illustration purposes. The house had large rooms. There is clear evidence that the house was modified later as evident from the red bricks that were used to create smaller rooms. These red bricks are from a different architectural period when compared to the original structure.
