South African National Parks (SANParks) is aware of the increase in cases of lameness among kudu in Addo Elephant National Park in the Eastern Cape. Due to the ongoing Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak in the province, the State Veterinary Department was notified.  Samples were collected from affected animals for testing, which have since returned as negative for FMD.

Earlier this month, as part of strengthened biosecurity protocols, all vehicles entering the Park have been undergoing mandatory spraying to reduce the risk of introducing FMD into the park to safeguard its wildlife and ecological integrity.

As a precautionary measure, investigations into the cause of the lameness is ongoing.   SANParks continues to work closely with veterinary authorities to determine the underlying cause.
