Wildlife Products

The Wildlife Products Section (WPS) is composed of an abattoir, a butchery with a biltong factory, a rendering plant, a skins treatment section, a staff living quarters and a stockpiles storage facility situated five kilometres away from the office. This is the facility that was formerly known as the Game Processing Plant (GPP) and NPD.

As culling was suspended indefinitely since 1995 the facility has been lying here idle with just occasional ad hoc operations on DCAs. In the ensuing discussions about the future of the facility the idea of a research abattoir was born.

Funding for the upgrade works was granted by SANParks ExCo and it is finalized now. The abattoir will do ad hoc operations on a regular basis from next year and it will also contribute to the community beneficiation programmes.
