Hondeklip Bay, which some have described as ‘rickety lighthouse on stilts’, is a small coastal settlement along the Atlantic shoreline. The lighthouse is situated on a rocky headland overlooking the bay. Constructed in the early 20th century, the Hondeklip Bay lighthouse is not, like many others in South Africa, built with a concrete tower. Instead, it is an eight-metre-high steel lattice tower that served as an essential navigational aid for vessels travelling along the Namaqualand coast, south of Port Nolloth on the west coast. It sent a lit warning and a fog signal to any ships passing by to avert potential dangers, thus supporting maritime trade, fishing, and regional development. The lighthouse stands as a symbol of early coastal infrastructure designed to improve safety in one of South Africa’s most dangerous maritime zones.
