Media Release: Lion safely back in Addo Elephant National Park

It is believed the animal, which was fitted with a tracking collar, escaped underneath a newly-erected fence after the park”s boundary was extended recently. His possible motive – to pursue one of the female lions on the other side of the fence. He apparently broke into the property of Schotia Safaris Private Game Reserve on Tuesday, which borders the eastern side of AENP. Here he was darted and moved into a separately fenced, electrified enclosure, which apparently was no match for keeping the lion at bay. He soon escaped from this boma and went in search of his heart”s desire, all the while being kept under the humans” watchful eyes.

A team of AENP rangers hurried to the area as soon as they were alerted about the escape on Wednesday, where they, along with a local vet, made quick work of cornering, darting and returning the Roaming Romeo back to the park.
