Media Release: KNP gate quotas in force during September holiday
Day visitors are urged to either arrive at the gate very early in the morning as the service is on first come first served basis or to pre-book their entrance via central reservations (012 428 9111).
“There have been instances wherein many individuals were turned back at our gates due to the fact that daily quotas were reached, something which is not desirable as it caused a lot of disappointment; said the KNP”s head of public relations, William Mabasa.”
The procedure is that once the daily quota has been reached, only people with bookings are allowed in. There is a possibility to allow more people if there are people who are moving out of the park however individuals cannot rely on that process as they might queue for long hours or end up not having succeeded in entering the park. Mabasa went on to encourage day visitors to please consider making the necessary prior arrangements before hand in order to avoid disappointed.
Day visitors who pre-book their visit are expected to pay a non-refundable deposit of R24 per adult and R12 per child; which is meant to secure their space because they would have been counted in the number that made the daily quota. Day visitors with advanced bookings are also expected to arrive at the booked gate by no later than 13:00 on the date of the booking, because after 13:00 the booking lapses.
To enhance efficiency at the gates, various field and honorary rangers will be deployed in order to assist gate staff with managing the queues and other different services available at the gates.
“All visitors are also reminded of the rules and regulations of the KNP, with particular emphasis on littering, speeding, getting out of cars and loud noises; otherwise it becomes one of the potential areas of possible conflict between park officials and the public.” “We also request visitors to plan their trip by observing gate opening and closing times so that they do not find themselves arriving late at the camps or gates either on their way in or out of the park;” concluded Mabasa.
Each gate has its limited number of day visitors that can be allowed per day e.g. in gates such as Malelane it is 550 and in small ones like Pafuri it is 385. The KNP has 10 entrance gates i.e. Pafuri, Punda Maria, Phalaborwa, Giriyondo, Orpen, Paul Kruger, Phabeni, Numbi, Malelane and Crocodile Bridge.
