Media Release: TMNP Says the Establishment of its Park Forum off to a Great Start

Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) said in a statement, the establishment of its park forum gained momentum last night (Wednesday, 2 June 2021) with the selection of a 29 member interim committee.

Speaking on the side-lines of the long-awaited establishment of the park forum meeting on Wednesday evening, TMNP Park Manager, Frans van Rooyen said this is a momentous event in the recent history of Table Mountain National Park which provided for a robust discussion and suggestions from the floor. “The candidates were classified in three working committees comprising of Recreational Users & Previously disadvantaged groups as the first working group; Safety & Security and Partnerships as the second working group; and lastly the Maintenance and Permit system.”

According to van Rooyen, Park Forums are established to encourage the building of partnerships in support of natural and cultural heritage conservation goals of South African National Parks (SANParks). They are a means of providing a legitimate platform to communicate Park/SANParks / stakeholder issues, to ensure participation of stakeholders on matters of mutual relevance and to facilitate constructive interaction between the Parks and surrounding communities. “It is expected that the Park Forum will allow for stakeholders to become informed about a range of views on issues which will ultimately result in better decisions that are more sensitive to stakeholder concerns and values.”

He said all interested parties will be represented in the Forum with the aim of being inclusive and formulating good working structures. “TMNP serves diverse communities and therefore a Forum should represent as such.”

The next engagement meeting will take place in the next few weeks where office bearers consisting of a chairperson, deputy chairperson, secretariat and the leaders of the sub-committees will be nominated by the members.

“We are truly grateful that the Park Forum re-establishment is finally underway and we're looking forward to engaging with the Forum to assist with the effectiveness of the stakeholder engagement process and create good working relations.” concluded van Rooyen.
