Media Release: SANParks Opened Public Engagement for Tokai Cecilia Management Framework Review

South African National Parks (SANParks) has opened public consultation seeking views on the review of the Tokai and Cecilia plantation areas Management Framework as part of the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) which will assist in protecting these amazing areas.

SANParks intends to engage with various stakeholders in the review process which will remain open for comment and participation until November 2021…” and we were encouraged to see over 200 people attending the meeting both in-person and on the virtual platform last night (Tuesday, 25 May 2021)”, said Park Manager TMNP, Frans van Rooyen. He said the process will be managed by two facilitators, Prof Wendy Foden and Dr Howard Hendricks who will be fully dedicated to the review process from start to finish in November 2021 when the final report is expected to be finalised and released to the stakeholders.

The TCMF review process aims to put the future management of Tokai and Cecilia areas in place as vital management sections of the Table Mountain National Park. SANParks was formally assigned management of the State-owned Tokai and Cecilia plantations as part of the TMNP on 11 February 2005 by the then Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry as vital management sections of TMNP.

According to Dr Howard Hendricks, TCMF Facilitator, the overview of the stakeholder engagement process will be undertaken in three phases and the one that is currently underway is shaped to understand the current context, issues and concerns; the second phase will focus on workshops for issues, concerns and proposals; and lastly, the last phase will look at the outcomes of issues, concerns and proposals.

Interested and affected stakeholders are encouraged to submit their written submission expressing their concerns, proposals and issues and the deadline for submission is Friday, 25 June 2021 via email to [email protected].

“We encourage everyone to take an interest in the management of the Tokai and Cecilia areas and to become part of setting the context for managing these areas over the next 20 years. They are beautiful and invaluable nature spaces, and we're encouraged to see and share the great care our stakeholders have for them”, said Dr Hendricks.
