“Jewel of the Free State”

Clarens is a small town situated in the Eastern Free State province of South Africa. It is famous for its spectacular sandstone mountains and wonderful climate. It is one of the most picturesque, arty little towns and it has recently been acclaimed as the best Trout Fishing waters in South Africa. Clarens is also spectacular horse riding country. The town is situated 20km from Golden Gate Highlands National Park, 40 km from Bethlehem and on the Northernmost point of the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho.

The town of Clarens is also known as the “Jewel of the Free State”. It is rich in beauty, with an aura of peace and tranquility. It is part of the scenic Highlands Route and is surrounded by spectacular mountains. Golden Gate Highlands National Park is located near the vicinity of Clarens, and it attracts many visitors. The town is known for the many Arts and Crafts shops which offer visitors a wide range of curious and original artwork. Another feature which adds to the picturesque atmosphere of the village is the many sandstone buildings. Clarens sandstone is a very popular building material in this area and beautiful sandstone lodgings abound.

Places of interest in the area include Titanic Rock, the Clarens Museum, the Ash River Outfall (one of the Highlands water scheme’s view points on the Bethlehem Road about 8km from Clarens), Mushroom Rock, Surrender Hill, Golden Gate Highlands National Park (for hiking, bird viewing and Bushmen paintings on Schaapplaats farm).

Sports and Leisure facilities are also available where visitors can relax and unwind.
