Brandwag Buttress
Brandwag Buttress represents a prominent geological formation within the park. Its existence is defined by the Clarens Formation sandstone that was deposited during the Jurassic period, around 190 million years ago. The sandstone’s warm golden and ochre tones give the park its name of ‘Golden Gate’, referring to the way the sun illuminates the cliffs at sunrise and sunset. It is easily visible from the R712 road, which runs through the park between the towns of Clarens and Phuthaditjhaba.
Brandwag, in Afrikaans, translates to ‘sentinel’ or ‘watchman’. The formation has long been seen as a guardian of the valley, watching over travellers and wildlife alike. For many visitors and locals, Brandwag Buttress represents the rugged beauty and ancient heritage of the eastern Free State. In addition to its geological prominence, the buttress holds spiritual and symbolic importance for various communities, and it is a frequent subject of photographs, paintings, and storytelling in regional folklore.
