Gideon Scheepers Monument
Gideon Scheepers, who had established his own commando during the South African War, was unfortunately captured by the British troops and charged with war crimes. After he had been found guilty following court procedures held at Graaff Reinet, Gideon was sentenced to death and faced execution by firing squad on 18 January 1902. This monument, comprising of three rocks sourced from the vicinity supporting a stainless-steel needle and erected by the Graaf Reinet Afrikaans Cultural Society, is in honour of Scheeper’s memory. It is placed near what is perceived to be his place of execution on 18 January 1902, at the age of 23. This is about 100m away from the riverbed. There is a fourth boulder which has an inscription. This whole monument symbolises the spirit of hope and faith in God and is illustrates how religious the Afrikaner nation has always been.
