Ten Suspected Abalone Poachers Apprehended at Forest Hall, East of Nature’s Valley

Rangers from the Tsitsikamma Section of the Garden Route National Park successfully arrested ten (10) suspects involved in abalone poaching during an anti-poaching operation on Sunday, 13 October 2024. Acting on information received from Southern Cape Operation Phakisa on Saturday,12 October 2024, a patrol was conducted along Forest Hall Road. Rangers observed a suspicious vehicle in the area, and upon approaching, the individuals fled, leaving behind two bags which were later confirmed to contain abalone.

Following the discovery, rangers notified the South African Police Service (SAPS), who responded to the scene. A thorough search of the surrounding area resulted in the apprehension of 10 suspects and one who managed to escape. During the operation, authorities seized 315 units of abalone weighing 48.16 kg, with an estimated value of R89,998.17.

This marks the second successful abalone poaching arrest in the area this year, following an arrest in April this year involving a suspect from Jeffreys Bay. The ten suspects are currently detained by the SAPS.

This operation highlights the effectiveness of collaborative efforts in protecting South Africa’s marine resources. South African National Parks (SANParks) congratulates the rangers, Southern Cape Operation Phakisa, SAPS, Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE Knysna and Mosselbay), Crime Prevention Unit, Plett Security and all stakeholders involved in this successful operation.

The arrest sends a strong message to poachers that authorities are committed to combating wildlife crime. The protection of marine resources is important for maintaining ecological balance and supporting sustainable livelihoods ensuring that future generations benefit from our natural heritage.
