Table Mountain National Park Safety Measures Strengthened Through Targeted Improvements

South African National Parks (SANParks) has implemented a series of targeted enhancements to strengthen the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) Sea, Air and Mountain (SEAM) K9 Unit, following a comprehensive operational review.

Independent experts assessed both the dogs and their handlers, leading to several strategic decisions to ensure the long-term effectiveness and welfare of the team. Some dogs were retired due to age or health considerations, while others were redeployed to other SANParks K9 units to better meet operational needs and ensure dogs are used optimally according to their particular skills and capacity.

All remaining service dogs continue to play a vital role in daily patrols, anti-poaching work, and visitor safety initiatives. The unit continues to operate effectively within its current capacity, supported by SANParks’ adaptive management approach, which ensures resources are regularly reviewed and optimised.

Upgrades to the TMNP K9 kennels have recently improved the dogs’ living conditions, while ongoing training, handler development, and enrichment programmes are being implemented to help maintain peak performance and welfare standards.

SANParks continues to work closely with the SANParks K9 Project Watchdog, the SANParks Honorary Rangers, and key sponsors and partners whose support is essential to the programme’s success.

Looking ahead, newly trained dogs and handlers will be seamlessly integrated into the SEAM Unit, ensuring continued excellence in operations.

SANParks remains dedicated to protecting both people and nature, and the TMNP K9 Unit continues to contribute meaningfully to that ongoing commitment.
