Table Mountain National Park Embark on a Safety & Awareness Campaign Ahead of the Festive Season

Today, 18 November 2022), South African National Parks (SANParks) has embarked on a Safety & Awareness Campaign in Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) ahead of the much anticipated busy Festive Season.

This is according to Frans van Rooyen, TMNP Park Manager who said the two days campaign will continue until Saturday, 19 November 2022 and will focus on some of the hot spot areas along the TMNP.

He said that TMNP has partnered with various stakeholders which include the South African Police Services, City of Cape Town Metro Police, SANParks Honorary Rangers, Working on Fire, Take Back Our Mountain, Cape Town Travel, Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, ADT Fidelity, and Neighbourhood Watch groups such as Tamboerkloof Watch, Devils Peak Vredehoek, Camps Bay Community Safety Initiative, Constantia Nek Crime Watch and Community Crime Prevention Houtbay.

“As we head into the busy season where we anticipate a large influx of visitors in the park, there are some challenges that tend to arise and we as the park would like to proactively create awareness of preventative measures that visitors should be aware of as they enjoy their time on the iconic mountain.”

The awareness campaign will focus on the following areas of concern:

  • Crime-related safety.
  • Fire safety.
  • Safety tips when hiking: Do’s & Don’ts.
  • Park-related issues: littering, illegal activities e.g. illegal structures, entering the park after hours, and loud music in the park.
  • Tourism info dissemination- places of interest in the park and surrounds.

“Education and awareness is one of the measures that we would like to strongly promote, as we believe that a safe visitor is an informed visitor. This campaign will be carried out in other sections of the park too to help visitors understand the park better. We appeal to park users to exercise caution while enjoying outdoor activities and always adhere to our visitor safety information tips. Please load our emergency number into your phone before setting off. Thank you to all our stakeholders involved in this initiative. Your support does not go unnoticed and we really appreciate it. Keep up the amazing work!” concludes, van Rooyen.
