The South African National Parks (SANParks) expresses its deepest condolences on the passing of Ms. Sharon Haussmann, Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Kruger Environmental Protection Foundation (GKEPF).
Ms. Haussmann’s passing comes at a critical time in the history of conservation in South Africa, as SANParks embarks on a bold new strategic direction—Vision 2040—which places collaboration, sustainability, and inclusive conservation at the heart of building resilient protected areas. Her loss is deeply felt across the conservation community, particularly as her leadership and vision were instrumental in shaping the very partnerships that Vision 2040 seeks to strengthen.
“Sharon’s leadership acumen was evident in every engagement—her clarity of thought, strategic foresight, and deep understanding of the complexities of conservation partnerships consistently elevated the quality of dialogue and decision-making. It was through her vision and determination that GKEPF was established, becoming a strategic partner to both the Kruger National Park and SANParks”, reacted SANParks Board Chairperson Ms. Pam Yako in shock of the sad news.
“We have lost a trailblazer, a passionate conservationist, and a true collaborator,” added Ms. Yako. “Her energy and commitment to building bridges between public and private conservation efforts have left a lasting legacy that will continue to guide us.”
Ms. Haussmann brought together diverse stakeholders with a shared commitment to protecting biodiversity, enhancing safety, and promoting sustainable development. GKEPF, under Ms Haussmann’s stewardship, became a cornerstone of collaborative conservation in the Greater Kruger landscape, representing a collective of private conservation areas bordering the iconic Kruger National Park.
Together with the entire conservation community and GKEPF membership, SANParks mourns the passing of Ms. Haussmann. We will honour her memory by recommitting ourselves to the path she eloquently helped to forge-one of unity, innovation, and unwavering dedication to the protection of our natural heritage.
May her legacy continue to inspire and guide us as we walk the trail, she so courageously blazed. SANParks extends heartfelt condolences to Sharon’s husband, Robin Haussmann, her son Aden and all the loved ones. May the beautiful soul of Ms Sharon Haussmann rest in peace “further added Ms Yako.
