Record Number of Visitors at Cape Point During the Festive Season

Cape Town, Monday, 14 January 2008 – Table Mountain National Park’s Cape Point section had 111 293 visitors between 1 December 2007 and 1 January 2008. This is a 2.7 percent increase compared with the same period last year. Nearly 10 percent of the visitors used a Wild Card to gain access to the Park.

A total of 23 274 cars, 1351 buses and 144 boats passed through the Main Gate during this period.

Hiking trails and accommodation facilities at Cape Point were also fully booked for the month of December.

Boulders penguin colony, the Park’s second most visited tourist attraction was visited by 74 454 people and this represented a 3.4 percent increase compared with the same period last year. A total of 4221 people accessed the facility using their Wild Cards.

Also, the Hoerikwaggo Trails, a suite of hiking and overnight stay products launched by Table Mountain National Park in 2006, had considerable success during the festive season. The People’s trail, a product that is subsidized by the Park and geared for disadvantaged communities, was fully booked during the month of December. Other Hoerikwaggo Trails products, namely the Orangekloof, Silvermine and Table Mountain Trails, all with overnight accommodation included in the products had a 53 percent occupancy during the same period.
