Rainfall measured in the Knysna forest this morning in Diepwalle was 78mm and Gouna 80mm according to Megan Taplin, Area Manager for Knysna. It was also about 56mm at the SANParks Thesen Island jetty.
In the Wilderness section of the Garden Route National Park , according to Sandra Taljaard, Area Manager for Wilderness 'the Touw River mouth was breached at 5am this morning and preparatory channels made for the Swartvlei estuary.'
The method used for this is called 'periodic artificial breaching' of the estuary mouth. The set standards for breaching are when water levels in the estuary reach 2m above mean sea level (amsl) for Swartvlei and between 2,1 and 2,4m for the Touw River.
At 8am 24hr rainfall measured in Bergplaas was 85mm, Hoekwil 126.4mm Farleigh 82.6mm and Corneliskop 84mm.
Teams assessing mop up operations in all sections of the Park have reported all fires were extinguished by the rain but further monitoring of potential hotspot areas continues.
