Press Release: Easter Safety

No visit to Cape Town is complete without a closer look at Table Mountain and surrounds, however, we’d like to urge visitors to take ownership of their own safety, by following a few simple steps:

1) Always make sure you are dressed appropriately before embarking on a hike or walk.
2) Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back – and always walk in groups of three or more people.
3) Do not go for walks late in the afternoon or early evening, and always be mindful of weather conditions. Remember, conditions on Table Mountain can change in an instant.
4) Keep valuables in your possession to an absolute minimum.
5) If you are not familiar with the mountain, make sure you use reliable maps of the area you intend using or get information from reputable sources, as it is very easy to get lost.
6) If you need assistance, call the Cape Town shared services control centre at 021 – 957 4700, who will contact the Park rangers on duty.

Visitors to the Park also need to remember that crime is a reality, especially since Table Mountain National Park is situated within a city. We would therefore appeal to people to be vigilant when sightseeing, and to report any suspicious looking characters to our control centre. Our Visitor Safety staff will, as always, be on duty the whole weekend, but it’s important to remember that the Park is massive, and we need the public’s co – operation.
