Part 1 of assessing damage to infrastructure – Knysna Fires
The SANParks team was tasked by the JOC (Joint Operating Committee) to map affected infrastructure onto a GIS system. This exercise will provide adequate information pertaining to the loss of infrastructure as a result of the devastating Knysna fires. This report which will give an account of the exact areas affected will be handed over to the incident commander of the JOC (Joint Operating Committee).
According to Len du Plessis, Planning Manager for the Garden Route National Park, firefighting has to take full advantage of the window opportunity between today, 9th and 10th of June 2017 at 12 when the wind picks up again. Efforts going towards extinguishing smouldering areas.” The wind is expected to pick up to an estimated 42km / hour by 11:00am on the 10th of June morning.

Historian Phillip Caveney from the Knysna Historical Society says the last time a fire of this magnitude hit the town of Knysna was in 1869. This is apparently a 1:150 years cycle.
