Three suspected poachers were arrested at Cape Point with over 1000 abalone during a routine patrol by the Table Mountain National Park.
South African National Parks’ (SANParks) Environmental Crime Investigation (ECI) unit alerted TMNP’s Sea, Air, and Mountain (SEAM) team and K9 unit on Thursday regarding suspicious activity at the Cape of Good Hope section of the park. The joint operation found poachers in their camp with all their gear and seized two vehicles.
All confiscated items have been booked with the South African Police Service (SAPS), and a case of poaching has been filed. The suspects are being processed by the SAPS.
The team collaborated with officials from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) in a joint sea and land-based operation against poaching.
Abalone poaching around the Cape Peninsula remains exceptionally high and is driven by well-organised local and international criminal syndicates. We urge anyone who notices suspicious activities to report it to the Table Mountain National Park emergency number at 086 110 6417.
