Now Hikers Can Blow the Whistle on Crime

High-pitched whistles are set to blow the alarm on crime in Table Mountain National Park. Over 1 000 whistles have been donated to park authorities by G4S South Africa’s largest integrated security provider.

The whistles will be handed to hikers and volunteers to help them summon support if they are threatened by crime in the park.

“As a security company operating in the city, we felt we could contribute to the prevention of crime in this simple yet effective way,’ said Andre van Breda, Regional Business Development Manager Cape Province & Free State Region.

The whistles were handed to Paddy Gordon, area manager Northern Section of TMNP who is responsible for safety by van Breda on Friday (September 14, 2007).

“We are grateful to G4S for this assistance. Public support to date has been tremendous with people volunteering their time to be on the lookout from crime, people increasingly reporting incidents to police and giving what support they can to our safety rangers.”

“If we all work together we can make a difference,” he said.

A shrill blast from a whistle can frighten off would-be muggers and alert people that someone may be in trouble.

“˜We welcome any support from the private sector which may help bolster our crime fighting efforts in the park said Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) spokesperson, Phumeza Mgxashe.

The whistles are not only effective in deterring criminals but can also be used in any safety situation if a hiker is hurt, lost in bad weather or when a cell phone fails.

They are an effective safety and crime prevention measure, which hikers or volunteer safety patrols can easily wear around their necks or slip into a pocket.

* G4S has long been involved with their city of Cape Town in providing a security service to the Cape Town Improvement District.
