Today, South African National Parks joins the rest of the country in celebrating Africa Day. This day is celebrated every year on 25 May within the African continent to mark the formation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963 and the African Union (AU) which was formed in 2002.
In light of the above, South African National Parks, which is the custodian of Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site would like to wish everyone a wonderful Africa day. Mapungubwe is the first African kingdom to have existed in Africa and therefore befitting to wish everyone well and encourage people to visit Mapungubwe hill to get the story of this kingdom and how it was discovered.
According to Mr Conrad Strauss, Park Manager at Mapungubwe “it is very important for South Africans and Africans at large to experience the tremendously rich history that is found in Mapungubwe and therefore imperative that people visit and familiarise themselves with Mapungubwe heritage. We wish everyone well and encourage all to celebrate and take pride in being Africans”.
Mapungubwe National Park is situated in Limpopo Province, about 70 km west of the town of Musina. It is located on the international boundaries of three countries, Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe, Mapungubwe is a unifying entity in the region.
A visit to Mapungubwe hill is a definite “must do” when one is in this national park however, if that cannot be achieved, a visit to the world-class interpretative centre is highly recommended. Furthermore, sandstone formations, mopane woodlands, unique riverine forest and baobab trees form the astounding scenic backdrop for a rich variety of animal life.
Happy Africa Day!
