Cape Town, Monday 19 May 2008 – As part of the pilot security intervention for Signal Hill and Tafelberg Roads, Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) prepared a crime threat analysis, which was tabled at a briefing session for Chubb and Fidelity security companies. The two companies will assist Table Mountain National Park in managing security on Signal Hill and Tafelberg Roads in the evening in line with the agreement brokered by the City of Cape Town.

The analysis details the various hotspots, hideouts and escape routes on the Signal precinct and profiles both the victim and the perpetrator. “Over the last four years, we have gathered intelligence, which we have shared with our new partners and we believe this will prove significant in making the new intervention effective,” says Paddy Gordon, operations manager, northern section of Table Mountain National Park.

Gordon says the TMNP will continue to be the command and control centre from its Kloof Nek visitor information centre, which is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The SAPS has also stepped up patrols of the area.

Incidents on the two roads, which fall outside the Park, are managed by the TMNP. The TMNP, for the past four years, has been and continues to manage access on the roads after 22h00 every night, as part of its crime combating strategy.

The TMNP invests over R4.2million of its own funds, in a visitor safety programme that includes 52 highly-trained rangers, a dog patrol unit and sophisticated two way radio equipment. The precinct also gets coverage of three CCTV cameras monitored by the City of Cape Town.
