Media Release: Things to do in Mountain Zebra National Park over the holidays

With about 70km of Mountain Zebra National Park’s 100km of tourist roads accessible to normal vehicles, guests doing self-drive game viewing are assured of seeing magnificent wildlife and spectacular views across the Park on any given day of the year.

Although Mountain Zebra is one of the smaller national parks, it certainly does not lack in activities. In fact, one of its most popular activities, cheetah tracking, is only offered here and in no other national park. Guests participating go out on a game drive vehicle with an experienced guide as he tracks one or more of the Park’s collared cheetah by use of a telemetry device. Once close enough, the groups goes in search of the animal/s on foot and can at times get as close as to within 10 metres of a wild cheetah in its natural habitat.

If you’d like something tamer, why not opt for a guided game drive? The Park offers morning, sundowner and night drives, allowing guests to learn more about the fauna and flora from the knowledgeable guides while going in search of the best it has to offer.

For those who prefer to explore the Park on foot, there are a number of options available. There are two short walking trails within the fenced rest camp that can be self-hiked. The Black Eagle Trail (2.5km) is a more challenging climb to the top of the rocky outcrop with spectacular views over the Park while the Imbila Trail (1km) is an easy, flat trail. Alternatively, opt for a guided morning walk or a hike up Salperterkop for a magnificent view over the Park and a rare view of an Anglo-Boer War relic or a visit to San cave paintings.

There are three 4×4 trails for the off-roading enthusiasts. The Juriesdam and Sonnerust trails are relatively easy drives while the Umgeni trail is more challenging.

For the hot summer days, guests are able to visit the Fonteinkloof and Weltevrede picnic sites with swimming pools, braai faciltiies, picnic table and ablutions. A fully licenced restaurant serving lunch and supper and curio shop is also available at the Reception building.

Conservation/entry fees are R48 per adult and R24 per child per day. For further information please contact the Park on 048 801 5700 or visit www.sanparks.org/parks/mountain_zebra
