SANParks’ Community-Based Economic Inclusion Programme On Display
South African National Parks' (SANParks) economic inclusion interventions are on display today through the support of small-scale fishing communities ...
In line with South African National Parks” (SANParks) vision of connecting societies, the organisation partnered with Cell C on the Take a Girl Child to Work campaign. Several girls from Tshwane Secondary School in Pretoria were hosted at Marakele National Park, in Limpopo on 25 May 2017.
SANParks CEO, Fundisile Mketeni said that SANParks has been part of this initiative for 10 years, since 2008. “This partnership not only exposes Grade 10 to 12 girl learners to the workplace but enables SANParks to showcase various fields of study to the learners and also provides relevant career information and guidance in decision making relating to their career choices.”
The learners were taken on a tour of the park, where they were exposed to the behaviour of wild animals and nature conservation. They also participated in an education-packed programme where SANParks mandate was presented and the girls were advised on personal grooming. Each learner also had a mentor who guided them and gave them information on their respective careers.
According to the Managing Executive of Cell C Foundation, Suzette van der Merwe “statistics show that this day has a profound effect on the girls, with many choosing a career based on their day in the workplace”.
Mketeni concluded by saying “as SANParks, we take pride in being part of this life altering initiative for the young women of South Africa. We want to empower and enrich the lives of all women in all of South Africa so that they can become the future leaders of our beautiful country.”
