Media Release: SANParks Mapungubwe Lecture Series Brings Cultural Heritage To Life

South African National Parks (SANParks) is extending the celebration of Heritage to October this year with the Annual Mapungubwe Lecture Series taking place at Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site from 25 to 27 October 2019. This is the third Mapungubwe Lecture Series weekend hosted by SANParks. The Mapungubwe Lecture Series intends to celebrate the richness and diversity of South Africa’s cultural heritage.

It forms part of an activity-packed weekend that will showcase the park’s many attractions. Guests will be transported back in time as they explore the proud history of Southern Africa’s first kingdom through a guided heritage trail and museum visit, as well as cultural performances. The Park not only offers traditional tourism experiences but also cultural experiences, where guests will have an opportunity to connect to their spirituality and heritage.

This year guests will be treated to two special guest speakers. On the Friday night, at the confluence, where three countries meet, celebrated poet and writer Dr Mongane Wally Serote will give a talk on Sacredness and African Traditional Healing in the context of Mapungubwe.

The keynote lecture will be delivered by Prof. Maano Ramutsindela from the University of Cape Town. At a special heritage gathering held under the stars on the banks of the Limpopo River, he will explore the topic: ‘Peace on the Hill. Reflections on Mapungubwe as a Peace Park*’.

From seeking out Mapungubwe’s majestic baobabs to sitting down for a traditional music festival under the stars on the banks of the Limpopo River, this weekend of cultural immersion promises to be an authentic once-in-a-lifetime experience that will broaden perspectives and create a deeper appreciation of our heritage.
