Media Release: SANParks gives Science a boost

It is through the goodwill of the communities close to the national parks that the parks are recognised as one of the premier conservation and tourism destination as most of the workforce is sourced from these communities.

“This gives us reasons that in our day to day business approach we take into account their concerns and needs, giving motivation to support long term and sustainable projects within communities adjacent to our national parks”, said Managing Executive: Parks, Dr. Nomvuselelo Songelwa.

Apart from the science lab handed over to the school, SANParks is further committed to a five-year partnership with the Education Department in the Northern Cape for provision of the mobile library service to schools within the province.

“We will provide one mobile library bus per annum for the next five years to the province starting from this current financial year. The first mobile bus and the learning materials will be handed over in February 2014,” added Dr. Songelwa.

In closing, Dr. Songelwa said that SANParks Management and the Board recognised that the planned investments to deliver through this social programme are insignificant compared to the enormous challenges our system is faced with. “With the limited resources available to us, it is our own way of extending our hand in building this society,” concluded Dr. Songelwa.
