The event, which took place on Tuesday 24 November was held at Golden Gate Highlands National Park and was attended by SANParks” COO Ms Lize McCourt, Acting ME: Parks Mr Paul Daphne as well as Acting ME: Conservation Dr Howard Hendricks.
The ceremony comes after days of training which was offered by The South African Wildlife College situated in Kruger National Park. This training course has equipped the Field Rangers, with the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding to enforce National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) and relevant Specific Environmental Management Acts (SEMAs) as part of their daily duties.
The region”s two Parks i.e. Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site and Marakele National Parks have the rhino as part of the wildlife species, and this puts them at a high risk for poaching activities. The training has therefore equipped them with the knowledge of the legal procedures when arresting perpetrators of environmental crimes.
The key note address was given by Ms Lize McCourt who said “SANParks” vision is one of sustainable national parks connecting society. This vision is driving the organisations on a mission of not only conserving but also apply effective law enforcement of our natural resource as a national agenda, so that they yield sustainable livelihood benefits for our people. She further said that it is important to appreciate this occasion today. We appreciate your service to SANParks and to our country”
In the Northern Region of SANParks a total of 55 rangers have achieved their EMI certificates, with 29 from Golden Gate, 17 from Marakele and 9 from Mapungubwe. Over 360 Rangers from across all the 19 National Parks have completed the training.
