South African National Parks, in partnership with FNB and Total South Africa, will kick off the 13th annual SA National Parks Week campaign on Monday 10 to Friday 14 September. Mountain Zebra National Park, just outside Cradock, will extend this offer of free entry to the first 100 day visitors through its gate on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 September.
The free access applies to South African day visitors and does not include paid-for activities and accommodation. It is meant to cultivate a sense of pride in South Africa’s natural, cultural and historical heritage, protected by the national parks system. The week gives day visitors free access to most of the 21 national parks, with special emphasis on ensuring that people from local communities close to parks get to know and experience a national park.
Besides enjoying the sights and sounds of the Park while embarking on a self-drive game drive through the Park, there are a number of other activities visitors can enjoy at no cost. There are walking trails inside the fenced-in rest camp and 4×4 trails for the off-road enthusiasts. Wildlife sightings throughout the Park are guaranteed – visitors won’t have to drive far to see the very animals the Park was named after – the Cape mountain zebra, while other exciting species to look out for include lion, cheetah, buffalo, brown hyena, aardwolf, bat-eared fox and caracal, as well as a variety of other species. If the weather allows a stop at one of the swimming pool and picnic sites is also a must-do activity.
Other parks in the region participating in the campaign include Addo Elephant (outside Port Elizabeth), Camdeboo (Graaff-Reinet) and Karoo National Parks (near Beaufort West). Addo Elephant will not be extending their free entry outside of 10 – 14 September, Karoo National Park will allow the first 100 day visitors through their gate free access on both Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 September and Camdeboo will extend their free entry week to include the entire weekend of 15 and 16 September.
