Lower Sabie, the busiest camp in Kruger, was devastated by a fire early in 1998 in which most of the main building complex was destroyed. The shop, restaurant and reception have since operated from temporary buildings.

The upgrading project will provide a new main complex on the north-western side of the existing camp. This will house a reception area, shop and restaurant overlooking the Sabie River and dam. In addition a new campsite providing greater privacy to guests, a swimming pool for camp residents, a day visitors area, and 24 new luxury tents are included in the project.

The tents – a very popular accommodation choice – will each accommodate two persons and have a small bathroom and kitchenette en-suite. These tents with en-suite facilities will be a first for Kruger and are in response to requests from visitors to the park. They have been placed to offer maximum privacy, much like those at Tamboti, a tented camp with 90% occupancy throughout the year. The new tents will be available on the booking system from about September 2001 and will be ready for occupation by 12 December 2001. The main complex will be completed by July 2002 and the total project cost is R10,5 million.

The popularity of Lower Sabie can be ascribed to its prime location in the park, offering fine game viewing routes all around. It is also easily accessible to the Gauteng and Mpumalanga markets.

The newly appointed Lower Sabie management team, under the leadership of the Hospitality Services Manager, Garth Holt – previous Camp Manager of Crocodile Bridge – and his deputies Duty Managers, Pieter du Plessis and Miriam Rapoo, are delighted at the prospect of improving the quality experience at the camp.
