Media Release: Karoo Lion

Karoo National Park management has requested that landowners bordering the farm Highlands, to the north-east of the park, be on the lookout for spoor or sightings of its escaped lion. Should they see anything which could lead to the safe recapture of the lion, they are requested to report it immediately.

This comes after the two search teams lost the animal’s spoor in the rocky and harsh terrain that they are operating in over the weekend.

After recent media reports quoting local Beaufort West residents saying they fear for their lives since the lion’s escape, Park Manager, Nico van der Walt, would like to reassure residents that the lion was last seen more than 12km from the north-eastern boundary of the Park. This is in the opposite direction of the town’s location to the Park.

Sightings or evidence of lion spoor should be reported to the police or the public can call the Park on 023 415 2828 or van der Walt directly on 082 801 2109.
