South African National Parks (SANParks) will once again offer free access to most national parks as part of the heritage month celebrations.

Free access will be extended to all South African citizens for day visits only from 17 to 21 September 2007. To facilitate free admission, day visitors must produce a valid South African identity document while scholars will be allowed to enter without identification.

The free access will not cover tourists on Open Safari Vehicles, tour busses or tour operator groups as these are commercial activities which will not have been offered freely to the end user.

Because of the short flower seasons of Namaqua, West Coast and Tankwa Karoo National Parks these parks will not be able to participate in the free access programme. This is the only time that these national parks are able to embark on commercial activities throughout the year. Normal entry tariffs will apply for these parks.

Cape Town residents will have free entry from Monday to Friday (17 – 21 September) at Cape Point, Oudekraal and Silvermine pay points in Table Mountain National Park (TMNP). In addition to the free entry, free use of facilities will only be on offer at Tokai and Newlands Forest.

To accommodate working people and scholars free access at these camps will also be extended to Heritage Day, Monday, 24 September 2007. Due to the limited carrying capacity, TMNP will not be able to allow free entry at Boulders pay point.

Do not forget to bring your valid South African identity document in order to qualify for the free entry. Standard terms and condition will apply and daily park quotas will be enforced.

Arrive early to avoid disappointments!
