South African National Parks (SANParks), in partnership with the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), is excited to announce a new lion research project in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. This important study will help us better understand the lion population in the park, including how many lions live here, where, and how they move in the landscape.
Lions play a vital role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem. To manage them properly, we need accurate information. That’s why our teams will be out in the field over the next few months, using cameras, tracks, sightings, and other safe, non-invasive methods to gather information. Each lion has unique features like whisker spots and scars—which help us identify them individually.
Visitors to the Park may notice research vehicles marked with SANParks or EWT logos. These teams may briefly access the lions for research photographs. We ask all guests to kindly give them space and show support by driving respectfully and not crowding the area.
This partnership is a big step forward for lion conservation, and we are proud to involve the public in protecting these iconic animals
