Garden Route Region Expansion
December started with the Garden Route region being expanded by an additional ± 80 000 hectares of indigenous forest and fynbos, as well as the elusive Knysna Elephants.
The long awaited transfer of the forestry areas has finally taken place. Staff were seconded to SANParks as from the 1st December 2004, with final transfer scheduled to take place on the 1st April 2005.
This transfer is the first step in the consolidation of protected areas in the Garden Route. Popular tourism facilities, which include the Big Trees, Garden of Eden, Jubilee Creek and the Outeniqua hiking trail, are now all under the management of SANParks.
This transfer is a significant contribution to the conservation estate in the Garden Route, a region that is under siege by golfing developments and increasing urbanization.
We would like to take this opportunity to extend a warm welcome to the forestry staff who are joining the SANParks family.
