Garden Route National Park Staff Unite in 2024 Cancer Awareness Walk
Garden Route National Park staff joined forces with the community of Wilderness to raise awareness about cancer, celebrate survivors, and provide support to those impacted by the disease during a Cancer Awareness Walk on Thursday, 31 October 2024.
Taking place during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the event emphasized the importance of healthy lifestyle choices and the critical role of early detection, screening, and diagnosis in improving cancer survival rates.
More than 200 participants gathered at Ebb and Flow Rest Camp, Wilderness Section of the Garden Route National Park to embark on this year’s Cancer Awareness Walk. The route took participants along Waterside Road onto George Road, then right onto Leila’s Lane. From there, they proceeded right onto Sanctuary Road and finally returning to the rest camp via Waterside Road.
The walk also featured a presentation from the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), with Ms. Sharon Venter providing insights into cancer prevention and support. In addition, free cancer screenings and consultations were offered to participants, reinforcing the message of early detection.
Cancer affects countless lives including our staff members and families. This walk is a testament to SANParks’ commitment to supporting the health and well-being of staff. SANParks remains dedicated to advancing cancer awareness and supporting survivors. With ongoing community support, the Garden Route National Park hopes to continue making a positive impact in the fight against cancer.
