The Savanna Science Network Meeting, currently underway in the Kruger National Park, entered its third day with dynamic discussions on two pivotal themes shaping the future of savanna research and management including Fire: A fundamental force in savanna ecosystems and Digital savannas.
Delegates explored the ecological role of fire as a natural and necessary process in maintaining the balance of savanna landscapes. Presentations highlighted how fire influences biodiversity, nutrient cycling, and vegetation patterns, while also addressing the challenges of managing fire in the context of climate change, conservation priorities, and human livelihoods.
Researchers emphasized the importance of integrating traditional ecological knowledge with modern science to develop adaptive fire management strategies.
The second theme for the day showcased cutting-edge innovations in digital technologies that are transforming savanna science. From remote sensing and satellite monitoring to artificial intelligence and big data analytics, participants discussed how digital tools are enabling more precise, real-time insights into ecosystem dynamics. These advances are helping scientists and conservation managers to better predict changes, monitor wildlife movements, and design more effective conservation interventions.
Day 3 underscored the interconnectedness of ecological processes and technological innovation. By combining deep ecological understanding with digital breakthroughs, the scientific community is charting new pathways for safeguarding savannas, one of the planet’s most iconic and biodiverse ecosystems.
The Savanna Science Network Meeting continues to provide a vital platform for collaboration, knowledge exchange, and the co-creation of solutions to ensure the resilience of savannas for generations to come. For proceedings, watch on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-rnWUnHkVE
